Autism: The Neurodiversity Movement & Respecting Autonomy...and What About ABA?

Marla Davis

For years, puzzle pieces and the color blue have symbolized autism, but many autistic adults are forging the path to change the way we view, think about, and talk about autism. Let's dive into the topic of neurodiversity, person first versus identify first language, puzzle pieces versus infinity symbols, supporting autonomy and identity, access to communication/AAC, prioritizing autistic voices, and the hot topic of ABA.

About

Welcome! I am so glad you're here. My name is Marla and I am an occupational therapist. I believe in the power of play, child-led therapy, building genuine relationships, presuming competence, compassion over compliance, and that the most growth happens when everyone has a seat at the table. With over 6 years of experience in pediatrics including early intervention, preschool early intervention, and school-based (K-12) practice. From my experience across a wide age range, I see how powerful and formative the first few years of a child's life are in shaping the foundation for their educational career. We can work together to make sure they are ready for school. With my experience with preschool early intervention and the preschool to kindergarten transition as well as my knowledge surrounding the IEP process, we can make sure that school is ready for them! Additionally, as a trained DIR Floortime (basic) provider, I believe that play is integral, and has the power to form strong relationships. I focus on developmentally appropriate activities that respect the unique individual differences of your child in order to build their relationship with you. Let's talk about the Floortime model!
